Mike’s Free Encounter #88: D’Aoine Deighe

This is the 88th in an ongoing series aimed at providing the overworked DM with ready-to-run encounters.

The PCs encounter the D’Aoine Deighe and their Frost Wyverns. Will it be chill or kill? The standard encounter involves two CR 6 creatures, but there is also a CR 2 option.

The D’Aoine Deighe are a fey people, distant relatives of the D’Aroine.  Unlike their cousins, the D’Aoine Deighe had a deep love for the frozen lands and took up uncontested residence in the ice and snow. As a people, they flourished for thousands of years until the gods sent an emissary to warn the of the Mallacht Oighir, a terrible supernatural cold that would devour their lands. The gods then offered the D’Aoine Deighe a gift: the elemental ancestry of the D’Aoine Deighe could be awakened and enhanced, allowing them to survive the cold and thus remain in their beloved lands. The D’Aoine Deighe agreed and were transformed. They soon learned the price of their transformation was the loss of their ability to have children, which plunged them into depths of sadness and despair. While they had become elemental creatures of the cold, the D’Aoine Deighe still retained their desire for family. This desire became somewhat warped, leading some of them to want to take control over the younger people and guide them.

While the Mallacht Oighir is a magical cold, it did influence the climate around it, greatly lowering the average temperature. While these lands were already cold, the magical influence attracted and even created creatures affiliated with the cold, such as the frost wyvern.
